About this session

Cross-border pipelines are returning to the agenda as countries seek new supply routes and stronger regional energy links (such as the Albania–Italy corridor, the proposed Oman–Saudi connections and west-to-east pipeline concepts in the UAE). Many of these routes involve long distances, multiple jurisdictions and shallow- or deepwater sections, requiring large upfront investment. One side argues that pipelines remain the most reliable and economic way to move large energy volumes and can underpin trade for decades. The other argues that geopolitical exposure, risk and long payback periods make fixed infrastructure less attractive in a market increasingly served by flexible LNG and seaborne supply. The debate will focus on whether the next generation of transnational and subsea pipelines can justify the capital and political commitment required, or whether flexibility in sea-based sourcing will increasingly win over fixed infrastructure.
