Drilling for Capital: Financing Upstream Oil and Gas Through the Transition

About this session
The upstream oil and gas sector faces substantial investment requirements even as actual spending has declined, with much of current capital used to offset natural field depletion rather than add new supply. OPEC estimates cumulative oil-sector investment needs of USD 18.2 trillion between 2025 and 2050, with more than 80% required upstream. Instruments such as bank finance, private credit, project structures, NOC partnerships and offtake-backed models can broaden the investor base. Capital providers are also setting clearer expectations on risk-adjusted returns and governance. The discussion will focus on funding sufficient supply without weakening capital discipline or transition credibility.
