The Refinery of the Future: Flexible, Modular and Smarter

About this session
Refineries are being redesigned as crude slates vary, fuel specifications tighten and margins come under pressure. Three shifts stand out: flexibility to process more crude grades and tune product yield to the market; AI and advanced process control for yield, predictive maintenance and real-time operations; and modular design for phased build. Each has a trade-off. Flexibility adds cost and complexity. AI pays off only where data and systems are ready. Modular units suit remote sites and phased capacity, not large refineries, which still hold the scale advantage. The discussion will focus on where each shift is commercially viable today, how it changes refinery economics, and what the refinery of the future looks like.
