Coal Gasification: Lower-Carbon Alternative for Energy Security

About this session
Coal gasification can convert coal into syngas that feeds chemicals, fertilizer and fuels, allowing coal-rich economies to reduce dependence on imported feedstocks. Economics rather than technology remains the constraint. Commercial gasification has been proven largely on higher-grade feedstock, so gasifier selection and gas cleaning have to be adapted wherever coal quality differs (contains high ash quantity). Projects remain capital-intensive relative to the imported ammonia, methanol and urea they displace, and the spread between the two moves with global gas prices. The discussion will focus on technology adaptation for high-ash coal, capital and emissions intensity, and offtake at costs that hold against imported alternatives.
