Building Gas-based Economies: Direction and Centres of Growth

About this session
Gas is expected to grow its share of global primary energy, and several economies have set explicit targets to build around it. India is working to raise gas from about 6% to 15% of its energy mix by 2030, while African demand is forecasted to rise 60% by 2050. The centres of both supply and demand are shifting, and economies that have long exported are now building domestic markets of their own.
Gas demand is price-sensitive, infrastructure is capital-intensive, and the long-term question is whether gas is a bridge to a cleaner system or a lasting part of it. For economies building a gas-based model, the task is to grow demand, secure supply and build infrastructure in step, without stranding capital or locking in emissions.
The discussion will focus on what is driving gas demand across sectors, what it takes to build the supply and infrastructure to meet it, and where the gas-based economy is heading as the transition advances.
