About this session
India has run one of the world's largest clean-cooking efforts, using several approaches at once. LPG access was extended at scale through PM Ujjwala Yojana, with over 10 crore connections. Piped natural gas was brought to homes through the City Gas Distribution roll-out. Electric and induction cooking is being supported alongside rooftop solar, and compressed biogas and biogas are being promoted in rural areas. Together these have moved the problem from giving a household a connection to keeping it on clean fuel. The task now is sustained use. Refill affordability, distribution reach and free biomass still pull households back to traditional fuel, so the goal is to make clean cooking the default rather than the occasional choice. The discussion will focus on what has worked across LPG, piped gas, electric and biogas, what it has cost and delivered, how India sustains and completes the shift, and what are the learnings for other economies.
