About this session
Refiners across the world, and especially in Asia, are investing heavily in petrochemical capacity, with the majority of it concentrated at the commodity stage. As that capacity comes online, commodity margins compress. Forward-looking players are already evaluating a move into specialty and niche chemicals, to secure feedstock offtake and capture margin closer to the end market. Specialty chemicals rest on formulation capability, technical service and customer relationships. Acquisition and licensing is therefore emerging as the faster route, offering process know-how and access to an existing customer base. At the same time, plastics circularity is opening a parallel source of value, as regulation, recycled-content targets and mechanical and chemical recycling reshape demand and give producers a new reason to integrate towards the end market. The discussion will focus on which capability to buy and which to build, where along the chain the margin actually sits, and how circularity and recycled plastics factor into that mix.
